It’s been a banner year for patient data access, with innovations like SMART Health Cards from the Vaccine Credential Initiative (VCI) and the Commons Project putting information like COVID-19 test results and proof of vaccination directly into patients’ hands.Developed and maintained by The Commons Project, this open source application can be used standalone or embedded within an EHR to read information in SMART Health Cards and Links. Supported data types currently include COVID-19 vaccine cards , general immunization records, International Patient Summaries , and Digital Health Insurance Cards.
The potential for savings results from a number of things, including replacing a paper-based system with a system that allows authentication of patients and insurance members at their doctor's office with a smart card and where they can obtain e-prescriptions. In this paper, a smart card based healthcare information system is developed.
